Auto Tombala is a thrilling card game that's all the rage in Mediterranean countries. The objective of the game is to score points by taking as many cards as possible to be equal to, or one more than, the number of points shown on the player's selected Tombala card. The game is played with a regular deck of 52 cards, and there are many ways to score points. Here we will show you the basics so you can start playing today!

The Basics

To begin, each player selects one card from their hand to be their Tombala card. This card remains face down in front of them throughout the game. The remaining cards are placed face down in a stack in the middle of the players.

The player who selects the highest number card starts the game. They draw one card from the deck and place it face up in front of them. The next player then does the same, and so on until each player has four cards in front of them.

At this point, play passes to the left and each player takes one turn. On a player's turn they draw one card from either the deck or another player's hand, discard one, and then play one. The aim is to take as many cards as possible to be equal to or one more than your Tombala number – remember that your selected Tombala card remains face down throughout the game. Winning this way results in gaining points equal to the number on your Tombala card. What makes Auto Tombala so exciting is that players can also win through other means such as melding (forming sets) and building runs (sequences). We won't go into detail about these here but they are explained further in other articles on our website [link]. In order to meld or build a run you must first possess three or more cards of the same rank consecutively – for example three Kings or three 2s etc. A run can start with any rank but must be continuous i.e Ace-2-3-4 etc. Melding allows players to lay down sets of cards on the table while building a run allows players to place single cards side by side (vertically or horizontally) creating a sequence. If at any time a player cannot take another card either because they have no more valid moves or because they already have four cards matching their tombala number then they pull a card from stock which restarts play for that person (see below).

When melding/building a run you must lay down all your cards at once otherwise you forfeit your turn and lost two points (discard two unwanted cards). As soon as someone has four matching tombala numbers OR fewer than four matching tombala numbers with at least one side suit – Ace through 10 – exposed then that player captures all of the exposed cards on the table EXCEPT for any casino (wild) Joker which remains with its holder (the first person who picked up casino jokers). At this point, if anyone else has any part of an exposed run they capture all such exposed sequences including those held by previous players even if those sequences contain wildcards; Joker(s) cannot capture other Joker(s). If there are no sequences exposed on table then current turnee captures nothing and end their turn normally however; any previously captured sequences remain on table until someone else captures them and so on . After capture, each sequence becomes part of that player's hand who captured it PROVIDED ALL CARDS REMAIN IN FRONT OF THAT PLAYER - if at any time any individual(s) Card(s) fall out-of-play then sequence is forfeited and removed from table - see "end-of-game" article for more clarity). If you have taken two consecutive turns without capturing anything then pull two cards from stock automatically – ending your turn! The winner is either first person with no more moves OR last person with playable moves. At end stock counts as zero for both (*see "end-of-game").

Now let's look at some examples:

Player 1 draws 5♥; Player 2 draws 4♦; Player 3 draws 9♠; Player 4 draws 3♥ Player 1 picks up 4♥ making it their tombala number; Player 2 immediately picks up 5♦ making it their own tombala number; Player 3 cannot pick up anything as 9♠ already captured by either player 1 or 2; Player 4 picks up 7♦ which completes their set making 3♥ their tombala number (remember 3♥ + 7♦ = 10 = Jack ♣ which is also tombala number). At this point both players 1 & 2 have won - notice how 5♦ doesn't capture 4♥ since 5♦ wasn't originally present on table when 4♥ was captured)
